Today’s Los Angeles Times highlights Fortunate Son Gavin Newsom’s rise to California’s elite political class and the tangled financial web that has led San Francisco high society to back Newsom to the tune of over $2 million during his political career. “He came from their world, and that’s why they embraced him without hesitancy and over and above everybody else,” Willie Brown told the Times – just another reason it’s clear that Newsom is detached from the issues facing Californians forgotten by Sacramento politicians.
“It all goes back to the Gettys as far as Gavin is concerned,” Jerry Roberts, former managing editor of the San Francisco Chronicle and an expert in Bay Area politics told the Times. The Times also reported that, ”through his friendship and business partnership with Gordon and Ann Getty’s son Billy, Newsom was at the center of the social scene led by the younger generation of San Francisco’s wealthy families. Those relationships would form the foundation of his life in politics.”
